The 2022 ESG Impact Report of Peninsula Papagayo highlights its commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives, exemplified by the creation of its centralized ESG department. In June 2023, Peninsula Papagayo joined the GSTC.
Being the home of 6% of the world’s biodiversity, Peninsula Papagayo shows a strong commitment to protecting the territory and taking care of its biodiversity and culture. Therefore, sustainability committees have been established in key areas such as water, emissions, waste, and biodiversity. Voluntary measurements of the water and carbon footprints are being undertaken, leading to the implementation of reduction plans to minimize the environmental impact.
To preserve the richness and diversity of the tropical forest and address global biodiversity loss, nature-based solutions, and research projects are being pursued across various domains, along with investments in the restoration of marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
Governance, Social and Environment at a glance
Regarding governance, Peninsula Papagayo updated its Code of Ethics, established a high-level sustainability committee, and implemented six operational sustainability committees. A team of 26 representatives and six organizations oversees sustainable development, with dedicated ESG team members.
Regarding the social aspect, education has been boosted in the community by 15 schools receiving technological infrastructure, and 1,300 students receiving donated textbooks. In health, preventive medicine, and psychology programs with over 7,000 participants took place, and over $700,000 was donated to the community.
The environmental aspect has been reflected in biodiversity protection and nature recovery. As a founding member of the Culebra Reef Gardens Alliance since 2019, Peninsula Papagayo contributed to reef restoration, managing 70 reef nurseries and 950m2 restoration sites.
With a focus towards zero waste, it has eliminated single-use plastic from the customer experience and implemented an Integrated Waste Management System that guarantees its treatment in accordance with the National Recycling Strategy. Water and carbon footprints are calculated, and 100% of consumed water is treated and reused for green area irrigation. A Net-zero roadmap has been drawn up defining the territories path to being Net-Zero by 2050.
