“Sustainability is a top priority for our clients – as it is for GBT too” said Si-Yeon Kim, Chief Risk & Compliance Officer and Executive Chair of Environmental, Social, Governance at GBT.
American Express GBT has been a GSTC member since 2021. Through its partnership with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), Amex GBT helps promote the booking of sustainable and third-party certified hotels according to the following criteria:
- Delivering effective sustainability planning.
- Maximizing social and economic benefits for the local community.
- Enhancing cultural heritage.
- Reducing negative impacts to the environment.
Amex GBT aims to preference hotels with sustainability standards (such as hotels certified to GSTC-approved standards with a goal of 25% by 2025). Recognizing the importance of third-party certification and GSTC accreditation in its long-term hotel strategy, in line with industry progress.
Travel as a force for good
The ESG Report 2022 defines Amex GBT’s purpose and vision around the core belief that travel is a force for good. Therefore, the company is committed to powering progress in three key ways: environmental, social, and economic.
From an environmental perspective, GBT aims to improve its green business travel marketplace, set science-based targets by 2023, and drive aviation towards net-zero carbon by 2050.
Amex GBT signed the World Economic Forum Clean Skies for Tomorrow ambition statement to achieve 10% SAF by 2030(1*). Which requires a collaborative approach from all parts of the aviation ecosystem.
In 2022, Amex GBT helped to educate the world on SAF by presenting at conferences, conventions, and sustainability summits across the globe, including GBTA, BTN Group, Boom Net Good Summit, and IATA.
They have also contributed to a number of white papers on decarbonizing aviation:
- Decarbonizing Aviation: Cleared for Take-Off.
- Making Net-Zero Aviation Possible.
- Sustainable Aviation Fuel Certificate (SAFc) Emissions Accounting and Reporting Guidelines.
On the social side, the company is also expanding its DE&I ecosystem, supporting regional impact, and creating a new travel social impact program with strategic partnerships. It has also increased the representation of women at senior levels and continues to grow the number of minority-owned businesses in its supplier portfolio.
